Variety Playhouse was built in 1940, but don’t worry! It was thoroughly remodeled in 2016. It was already my favorite local venue before they made it even nicer. Located in Atlanta’s Little Five Points, the neighborhood is about as “alt” as ATL gets.
Venue:
Capacity is ~1,100 people, with a sloped floor with movie theater type seats nicely staggered for a view. An open floor/pit area is located directly in front of the stage that may be available for general admission or converted to reserved seating with folding chairs. The fixed seats on the slope stop at a level where the first row views are may or may not be obstructed by those standing below depending on the size of the crowd. Depending on the nature of the show, those with seats may still need to stand should others in front choose to do so.
General admission seating, when provided, generally includes the pit area and may include all or part of the balcony. Views from the balcony may be obstructed after the first several rows of seats from the railing unless standing.
The sound is almost always great (unless you stand next to one of the side speakers at the stage), the stage lighting is among Atlanta’s best, and the neighborhood is a great area for pre-show dinner and drinks. The area has a neighborhood feel with eclectic shops and patrons.
Parking:
Paid parking is available behind the venue and free parking can be found at times along area streets where resident stickers are not required. Traffic can be difficult getting to the area so plan accordingly.
