Marillion Weekend – Montreal 2025 – Day 3

If fans attending the Marillion weekend submitted their preferred playlists, probably 70% of what the band delivered would be uniformly included among them.

If you’re reading this, you’re familiar with the songs.  There’s no point in an exhaustive review.  Hogarth was Hogarth, and the band excelled as always.  The sound and lighting were stellar as well.

R & D

R&D opened the final night. This was an enjoyable instrumental set with keyboards and guitar, inviting the listener to imagine their own journey.  One song was introduced about relating to the ocean, and the accompanying blue and teal lighting helped with the journey.  Responding to Rick’s tongue-in-cheek comment for a song that would be suited “if only we had another guitar,” Steve Rothery joined for subtle guitar interplay.

I’ll borrow here from the bio for the show:

R&D is the collaboration between the soundscape music of Rick Armstrong and the guitar creativity of Dave Foster, inspired by artists such as Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Jean Michele Jarre, and Klaus Schulze.

Rick, who is also a member of Edisons Children with Pete Trewavas and Eric Blackwood, has released 3 albums of his own – “Infinite Corridors” in 2021, “Spatial Elements” in 2022, and “Chromosphere” in 2023. Work on the next album has begun and a release is expected in 2025. Rick has also played bass with Steve Rothery and Friends in Chile and keyboards with Lonely Robot on Cruise To The Edge 2024.

Dave is well known to Marillion fans as part of the Steve Rothery Band and has played on Marillion Weekend stages more than anyone else outside of Marillion. He has also contributed to songs on each of Rick’s albums. Besides his own solo work (2 albums), The Dave Foster Band (3 albums) and SRB, Dave has played with a number of other bands, including Big Big Train, Panic Room, and Mr. So & So, as well as making a long list of guest live appearances.
