If you’re lucky enough to catch Atlanta’s own Faye Webster’s last few shows of her US tour, take a second to pause and look around at the crowd. You’ll find dozens of stories of falling in love to Webster’s soundtrack. There’s something about Faye’s sound; her marriage of teardrop country, 70’s ballads, and pining whispery voice that invites you to close your eyes, sling your arm over your lover (or friend) and just sway.
Or if you came alone, you can just sway.
Webster’s music elicits a chill mid-tempo 70’s night-drive energy. Imagine playing her opening song “But Not Kiss” at 2 in the morning on an oddly quiet Atlanta highway. Or maybe Imagine “I Know You” as you walk through autumn leaves.
If you love Clairo, Beebadoobee, Lizzie McAlpine, Boy Genius, or Girl in Red, you’ll love Faye Webster.
The night began with another Atlanta native, Upchuck, a high energy punk group. A stark contrast from Faye but just as sincere about their lyrics. Lead singer Kaila “KT” Thompson shouts at the top of her lungs about her struggles; like in ‘Freaky,” depicting her pride in being her fullest and loudest self and the judgment that comes with it. Meanwhile the band lift her up with relentless, pure punk, sort of reminiscent of the Sex Pistols.
