Eddie’s Attic

Eddie's Attic

Eddie’s Attic my favorite venue for an intimate performance.  Eddie’s is located on the second floor of a small building located adjacent to Decatur Square, essentially the city’s central gathering place for restaurants and events.  It doesn’t announce itself conspicuously, but if you find the Waffle House and look to the side alley, you’ll find the exterior steps.

Venue:

Eddie’s capacity is 65, probably 40 of which are at small tables tightly packed in front of the stage.  These are sold as “tables” and include four tickets each.  Individual tables are assigned on a first come/first served basis. Given the abundant dining options nearby, it’s a reasonable policy to encourage guests to arrive early and dine with them.  Tables will remain reserved if you arrive shortly before the show, of course, but would likely be in the back.

Not every table is a great table, though.  The general congestion and lack of stage height may present viewing challenges depending on who is seated in front of you.  Still, it’s not something to worry about too much.

There is additional seating on a wooden bleacher to the rear of the tables which has several rows, and otherwise guests can sit at the bar or stand… somewhere.  Standing requires a spirit of charity as the bar staff are frequently making their way to the tables and back.

Eddie’s caters to singer/songwriters,  most of which carry some reputation and history.  Shows may be acoustic or electric, and the venue suits them both well, though acoustic feels right in the place.  You won’t be disappointed at all with the sound.

Uniquely, and importantly, Eddie’s refers to itself as a listening room. During the songs, there may be a clink of a fork on a plate, but silence is strongly encouraged other than the usual appreciation after each song.  If you want to talk during a show, step outside or just don’t go.

Parking:

Do not underestimate how long it can take to get to Decatur from wherever you are around Atlanta.  Once there you’ll find a good number of paid parking spaces around the square, but they’re often full.  There are reasonably priced parking decks within easy walking distance, such as adjacent to he Marta bus station.

Dining:

As mentioned, Eddie’s prospers in part for the money you spend there.  Their food is good, and drinks are reasonable.  If you arrive before the venue opens, they have a rooftop area where you can be served prior to the show.  Or, you could later watch the show on CCTV if so inclined.

Otherwise, there are numerous other restaurants in the vicinity.  Those in the know for the Atlanta beer scene would do well to visit the Brick Store Pub.  A pre-meal or post-show Belgian, you say?

Also, if you’re there really early, Decatur CD (and vinyl) is only a few blocks away.  This store has withstood the Amazon challenge, you’ll find a discerning selection for music enthusiasts.  Support local business, right?
