The Dirty Guv’nahs Rock Athens with Revival, Promises, and Classics

The Dirty Guv’nahs returned to Athens, GA, for another celebratory night that felt like a homecoming. The Knoxville-based band has long focused their live energy on southeastern cities, where they first earned their loyal following — and where their fans continue to show up in force.

Though they only play four or five shows a year, the Guv’nahs continue to balance family life with a thriving music career. Far from being a nostalgia act, the band showcased their newer catalog at the Georgia Theatre, blending seven songs from 2021’s Revival and 2025’s Promises into the set. New tracks like the opener “Little Miss Bittersweet” and “Backbeat Melody” stood confidently alongside older favorites. And, of course, the Athens crowd roared for “Good Night Down in Georgia,” a regional anthem that never loses its power.

Frontman James Tribble commanded center stage with his typical engaging charisma, but the Dirty Guv’nahs’ strength lies in the collective energy of the band. Each member brought personality to the stage — from the soaring tenor sax to searing lead and slide guitar, from layered keys to strong female backing vocals.

While the band is rooted in Southern rock, their set draws comfortably on a variety of influences including country, Americana and classic rock, without a hint of posturing or preachiness. They live in a positive space, and their audience joins them on that journey.

This particular night, the band covered Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released,” highlighting everything each member of the band does best, and the Stones’ cover, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” was an epic blast of rock and roll to send fans into the street smiling… and back, wherever they can find the band.
