My Morning Jacket Brings Black Sabbath to Halloween in Atlanta

My Morning Jacket hit Atlanta for a two-night stand at the venerable Fox Theatre, closing out their 2025 Is Tour. The second night celebrated the 20th anniversary of their phenomenal album Z, and many fans were counting down the days for that show. And that’s fine if they bought tickets for both nights, but pity the souls who didn’t attend MMJ’s Halloween performance, when the band and the crowd both came dressed for the occasion.

MMJ took the stage in full Ozzy-tribute mode, launching the evening with a fiery rendition of “Black Sabbath” and dressed for the occasion:

  • Jim James – round purple specs, black leather coat, black wig, and silver cross

  • Carl Broemel – not a Flying V, but a polka-dot Gibson in the Randy Rhoades spirit

  • Tom Blankenship – superhero-worthy “Blizzard of Oz” red cape with white pants and shirt

  • Bo Koster – a black monk robe and silver cross

  • Patrick Hallahan – tasseled arm sleeves (and an Ozzy T-shirt to top it off)

There was a mid-set cover of “Fairies Wear Boots” and a hint of “Mama I’m Coming Home” later, but a wink and a nod from someone who arrived early made it clear to hang around for the encore of “Crazy Train.”  Like that was in doubt.

There’s something magnetic about this band, and Jim James in particular, that mesmerizes an audience. Yes, they’re consummate professionals, but it’s the energy and connection that makes an MMJ show unforgettable. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such a large crowd as engaged throughout a show, hips moving, hands in the air, singing along to themselves or others, with no less excitement for three new songs.  And to have that kind of energy at the end of a tour, just phenomenal.

I’m certain the next night was possibly as good, because MMJ brings it every time.  But their performance on Halloween at the Fox was a set for the ages.  Pictures do tell stories, complemented by an insanely good lighting.
